Malaysia Landmarks : Muzium Negara

The first museum  in the nation dates back to 1883 started by the British in Taiping. It was followed by the Sarawak Museum in 1888.

Muzium Negara (National Museum) replaced the Selangor Museum which was built in 1899.

A section of the Selangor museum building was accidentally bombed during World War Two by the Allied Forces on March 10, 1945.

The museum was then housed in a temporary building from  1953 to 1959. (see pix below)

A museum building was soon planned. Construction of Muzium Negara began in 1959 with a modest budget of RM1.5mil.

The present building design which has the features of a traditional Malay palace was chosen by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister.

The Third Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Putra Al-Haj Ibni Al-Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail offcially opened Muzium Negara on August 31, 1963.

It's a three-story building measuring 109.7 metres long and 15.1 metres wide. The central point had a width of 37.6 metres.
